If I buy a domain name, am I stuck with that company forever?

I am looking at buying a .com domain. I have never done this before. People recommended 1and1.com to me, but feel free to tell me if there is someplace better! I am concerned that if I register a domain with one company, and then I want to move to another company, that the original company won%26#039;t let me. If I get my domain from 1and1.com and then decide to switch to a different company in, say, a year, do I have to get a new domain? Does my domain stay with the company I register with? I am completely new to all of this. I get the difference between the domain [just the name] and hosting [the actual website]--do they both have to be the same company? I just don%26#039;t want my ignorance to cost me down the road. Any advice for beginners would be appreciated!

You should be able to change your domain to any company after your contract is up, if you have one. Some places will make you stay on for a year, like a mobile phone contract. But after that it is your domain and you can take it where you want.

Some other good domain sellers are godaddy.com and Netfirms.com. Usually you want to keep your site hosting and domain with the same company - it makes things a lot easier.

they will let you, but you may have to pay a canceling fee first.

Other Replys:you register your domain through a registar then a hosting provider hosts the domain. usually the registar does hosting as well, eitther way you can transfer your domain its yours. make sure you save your login info for the registar

Other Replys:Hi,

Domain names are never really purchased. It%26#039;s more like renting. The registration fee is usually for a year, at least everywhere I have ever purchased a domain name from.

Just because you purchase(rent, if you will) a domain from one company does not mean you have to host with them. You also don%26#039;t have to stay with them if there is something about their service that you don%26#039;t like. Most companies charge you for Domain Name Transfer though.

A lot of places will offer you free hosting for a period of time, if you purchase your domain name from them.

I am not sure if they are still offering it, but Microsoft office live had free domain name and a free hosting package. (Basic package though, no bells and whistles.)

Myself, I purchased my Domain Name from Verio and host it at Thinkhost.com

I love Thinkhost, they are powered by 100% renewable energy. Good hosting company if your into eco-friendly. They have good up time and are monitored for crashes 24/7.

Well, I hope this helped you. Feel free to contact me if you want further info.

peace,

mavin

Other Replys:an honest, above board registrar has no claim on your domain.

they are just the company you are paying to represent you to ICANN.

ICANN is the governing body of the internet.

I personally have the bulk of my domains registered with Godaddy, this is personal choice based on experence.

Godaddy gives you total DNS control while 1and1 doesn%26#039;t.

Godaddy also includes a free hosting account with every domain.

this can save you a ton of money in hosting fees.

1and1 is a German company, tech support is outsourced to the Philippines and India, while GoDaddy is American with American call centers in Arizona.

GoDaddy rocks.

Other Replys:YOU NEVER BUY YOUR DOMAIN NAME - THAT%26#039;S IMPOSSIBLE - ALL YOU CAN DO IT - YOU CAN JUST LEASE DOMAIN NAME FOR CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME - 1 or 2 or 3 years - depends what the company doing that service does - That is first thing you need to know - just before expiration of yr lease you can re-lease it again from any other comapany - if you don%26#039;t pay on time internet register will upon typing yr previous domain name put - this name is available for registering for a certain period of time (i think is one month) and after that bye bye if you don%26#039;t pay up - first who pays for yr previous name has it -

- i saw also ads to buy domain name BUT ANY AD SUGGESTING YOU BUY DOMAIN NAME FOREVER IS FALSE ADVERTISING - you just lease the domain name as i said before for certain perion of time - also note here that you will not receive any notice when the time comes that you have to re-lease yr name - you need to take care of that and do it on time -

- these internet guys are businessman - they know they%26#039;ll make more money by leasing than by selling

- also company that you pay to register (lease) yr domain name is just broker - internet name register is international organization and company you pay to just has database of all free domain names and they earn a fee (same like broker keeps database of houses to sell and makes brokerage fee when sells it) as middle man between you and international organizations that keeps domain names under their control -

any company you work with does not own free domain name -

as i said they%26#039;re just broker

go with some reputable company like godaddy.com - they have my renewals subpage and you won%26#039;t have any problems - DON%26#039;T FORGET 2 THINGS:

- YOU JUST LEASE IT

- RENEW ON TIME

Other Replys:You can purchase a domain from one company and move to another you just have to have the admin email address set to something you can access because it all takes place through email.... If you decide to move you email your current hosting company to let them know you want to move your domain. You need to know the DNS Server names of the new host prior to this so they can change in and redirect your domain name to the new servers. http://www.cdconsult.biz is a good web host.

Other Replys:ICANN rules will not allow a newly registered domain name move to another registrar for 60 days after the name is registered. Other than that, if you are dealing with a reputable domain name registrar, you should not have any problems.

Hosting companies will want your name registered with them, so do your research before you choose a company. Cheap hosting is available all over the web, comparison shop.

Since you are a newbie make sure there is a lot of customer support and advice available.

Good Luck on your Venture!

HELP in website hosting!?

I am new at this...i need to host my wesbsite, but before that i want to know:

1- is it important to register my domain name with the same hosting company?

for example: i buy my domain from godaddy.com and i host my website at hostnexus.com.

2- I want to buy an SSL, but should I also have it from the same hosting company or it is ok to buy it from another website?

sorry i%26#039;m totaly new at this.

HELP in website hosting!?

most people get it at two different places, if I were you I%26#039;d register it http://www.LocoDomains.com , they have the best deals, Prices start at $0.99, and get hosting at http://www.JuicyHosting.com

HELP in website hosting!?

Better stick to the same company for all the Services. Becuase it would not lead to any confusions. Say your domain is working right but ur hosting is down. The Hosting people always have a chance to say your Domain is not working and vice versa.

No better stick to one company.

Other Replys:godaddy.com offers all the services you need in one place, plus their web hosting is very low priced, I think you should get all in one place, one account, you can handle it better, especially when the renewal time comes. You also, can do it with different companies but it is more work.

Other Replys:You can buy the domain and hosting seperately but you need to buy the SSL from the same guys who host you. There is no other way, A.F.A.I.K.

Other Replys:You are going through the same things we all go through trying to select a host. It is for all general purposes easier to just buy your domain from where you plan on hosting. But for economic ones you may want to buy from Go Daddy. The host you choose should depend on what your needs are. As a good rule , always remember %26quot;you get what you pay for%26quot;. The best host for any size undertaking is %26quot;Dreamhost%26quot;.

or if that%26#039;s more Bang then you will ever need look at %26quot;hostmonster%26quot;. You can look for hours, and find just about anything you want to find about the same webhost. Dreamhost is recommended from many very ethical webmasters w/ no reason to lie. What you should do is watch this video on choosing a webhost.

But if you really want to save yourself a ton of future trouble take the free online course offered from Harvard no less. All lectures are avail. on flash,mp3,Qtime,and usually Jargon media platforms. You can even take the exams. I took the entire course in 3 days. You will become a entry level webDesigner by the time you are done listening to all of the lectures. The course instructor is really good.

Wait until you see what they have to offer ! I%26#039;ve been at this for awhile now,let me give you some of my bookmarks for you to look at. When you are done use the 123promotion tool to submitt your site. You will thank me when you get to that point. In fact you should find just about everything you will need to become like a green beret of webdesign.Semper Fi !

Other Replys:It%26#039;s okay to buy everything at different places but it%26#039;s probably easier just to have it all in the same place. That way you don%26#039;t have to worry about changing any of the DNS stuff. You can get everything at http://www.doggydomains.com They have a special going that if you get hosting you can get a domain for $1.99

You can host your site through them or not. I own three names that I haven%26#039;t done anything with. I think it%26#039;s like buying real estate. Some day someone might want to buy them from me.

My Web Domain Registrar Dissappeared, how can I have my domains transferred?

I have a problem, my web host, which is also my domain registrar dissappeared or went bankrupt, I have no clue, I%26#039;ve issued a order for my domains to be transferred to another registrar because that one is obviously unreliable. The problem is the order hasn%26#039;t been accepted because the registrar%26#039;s servers are down, meaning the emails cannot be sent.

So what are my options in these situation? I cannot set up one of my back up domains because the damm host put me in a mess.

My Web Domain Registrar Dissappeared, how can I have my domains transferred?

Try looking here

http://www.icann.org/transfers/

If that doesn%26#039;t help, I would contact the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

http://www.icann.org/registries/contact....

My Web Domain Registrar Dissappeared, how can I have my domains transferred?

I%26#039;ve done a bit of research and according to a few people, there%26#039;s not much you can do. If your domain registrar goes into bankruptcy, you can%26#039;t transfer the domain name.

(one source:)

http://www.cyberindian.com/domain-regist...

Are you sure that you haven%26#039;t been scammed? There are reports of that happening every once in a while, and it%26#039;s awfully fishy for a domain registrar/host to simply vanish.

Other Replys:try transferring with http://www.4clickdesigns.com

Why domain forwarding is required?

I registered a domain with one company now i want to host my site on another host , do I need to transfer that domain to my new host ?

Why domain forwarding is required?

Yes..

Domain forwarding is a very cost-effective way of beginning to build a web presence for your business or organization if you have a limited budget and only have a sub-folder within someone else%26#039;s website. With Domain Forwarding your homepage extension in the address bar allows it to look like a fully established website. Use Web Forwarding to point your easy-to-remember domain name to any existing Web address that may be long or confusing.

:)

Why domain forwarding is required?

What you do is you go into the control panel of where you bought the domain from (like if you bought it from godaddy, go to godaddy.com, if you bought it from Network Solutions, go to netsol.com) and change the DNS servers to your new host, removing the old host dns entries.
