I have a webpage publishing program and want to design a webpage for a friend. Does it cost anything to put it on the net?

Not if you use a free web hosting site! There are many out there. Just type free web hosting in your search box. You may also find that you have webspace in your ISP account. Usually, they will provide at least 20 megs of space when you sign on.

NO you DONT have to buy a domain name! A domain name simply directs someone to a site that is already up and running! You CAN however buy a domain name once your site is up and you want to show the world! A domain name simply makes it easier for people to find it! When you upload your page to your webspace, it will have its own url. All a domain name does is direct itself to that url!

usually this depends on how many works do they make in the year. This can be difficult to say because some can sy that they earn more and others earn lower. The best thing to do would be getting a jog first so you can get experience and also get in touch with someone that studies at the same school that you do. maybe he/she needs help to do somenthing and in this way you could get some experience because in the beginning it might be very hard to find something that pays well.

You want to make a medium income and play some then you make $30,000-50,000 I would say. You want to just make ends meet then you make $20,000.

You could use an HTTP referer... I%26#039;m not actually a web designer type of person, so I don%26#039;t know the specifics, but I don%26#039;t think this system is sound. Perhaps it%26#039;d be easier just to implement password protection.

Do you have any ideas for a simple, affordable way to advertise my web design company?

I have bery little money to spend on advertising, and I can%26#039;t think of any effective way to do it. Obviously I could register it with search engines, but that costs some amount of money a month. The only idea I have so far is flyers, but I doubt that will have an luck in getting clients. They are very affordable now and are fantastic for promoting almost anything. Price for service under $50.00 start up and maintenance for about $12.00 per month. Check out Yahoo Small Business. Also if you are serious about web design try getting yourself listed in local trade magazines or a small newspaper ad in the want ads section. The best is always an actual site though. In your heading area be certain to leave your contact information complete, some search engines say to limit it to 75 characters but it is not so major an issue you cant %26quot;advertise%26quot; there. Also you mentioned cost for search engines, most engines do have free submission areas as well. They are not guranteed inclusions but if you have a very well structured site you almost always get inclusion it just takes a few months. But if nothing else you get listed in their directories, which is always a start. Hope this helps.

Standard site width for design?

In designing a new web page template I%26#039;m finding it prohibitively challenging to get CSS to work on IE. So much so that I%26#039;m almost tempted to just use tables for it rather than spend time trying to hack CSS to make it look uniform for all browsers including IE. What is the standard width that one should design a site to these days - 1024 pixels? Even though that may be the resolution it is often not the default browser window width when opened. What is a good rule of thumb?

Anytime you are considering changing web hosting services you should download a copy of all your current files and folders from the existing web server to your local computer. Once you have done that you can upload them to your new host in the future.

Changing web hosts is as simple as going to your domain name registrar and modifying your DNS settings for your domain name to point at your new web hosting service. Then uploading your files to the new host and waiting for the domain name to re-propagate which can take up to 72 hours but .com domain names should be completely propagated in under 24 hours.

As far as your starter page I think you are probably talking about your index page. Your index page is the page that shows up when you go to a domain name directly. The index page will usually have an .htm, .html, .php extension on it. Replacing it will replace that first page you see. To modify it you will most likely want to do that in a WYSIWYG editor.

Nope, not if you know HTML. You can simply code HTML into notepad and save the file as .htm opposed to .txt. The .htm turns the notepad file into a webpage ready to be uploaded via your webhosts control panel or a web editing software. Using software can be very helpful, especially if you don%26#039;t know HTML, but it is not necessary. You can download a web template to get you started. If you mess around enough with the template you can start to figure out basic HTML.

Not really. A page being one and a website being many pages.

There are some companies online that sell whole pages where you can edit the templates, the better ones use something like php to add headers (and other things that repeat page to page) to the many pages so editing or adding content isn%26#039;t to time consuming or annoying.

You need a domain and host, one with the right amount of space, and tools you will need to manage it. Yahoo actually has a decent service and some good tools but you might be better off finding someone to design the actual page and scripting.

CoffeeCup is a nice editing program thats easy to learn, they also have drag and drop editing now I think. Alot of tools like ftp and some smaller flash design software on their site also.

Decide on your design elements (logos, colours, typefaces etc) and how you%26#039;re going to use them consistently. Rough things out on paper so that the site can be easily navigated. One great way is through universities. The university of San diego has courses on web design and even a Q%26amp;A on campus around August 18th. You could also try the University of California - San Diego.

I want to be able to have graphics, links to a variety of other pages, fillable forms and although not initially the ability to create a database. I was wondering if anyone could help me with a couple things. One, why do my transparent PNG images show up transparent on some machines, but on others the have grey backgrounds. Also, how do I speed up my load time for slower internet conenctions? I exported my slices with IMage ready and most pages are about 10k, but the navigation still loads slow. That is a tall order. However, there are content management systems (CMS) free for the download available.

Geeklog is a CMS I use for many of my websites. Search for it. Gallery is a photo/image gallery I also have some experience with. Look for a host with a linux OS and MySQL databases and you will be able to set up the packages.

Coding what you want from scratch is possible but it will take some time %26amp; effort to do so, especially if you have to learn it all from the start.

Distorted top page?

I recently removed some programs from my computer. There%26#039;s a new problem. The top page of my 360 web page is distorted. All that previously fit on the top page no longer fits the way the top page was designed to appear. In fixing the previousl problem with the programs removed, some cookies were also removed. Could this be causing the problem with the images on the top page. How do I fix it?.

Maybe what could be happening is that when you removed other software, some files needed to make Yahoo page work are lost. You could try by testing your video card, reinstalling software, etc. Check all other programs you have, to see if the rest is working properly. God luck

Just don%26#039;t use the WWW? Despite the host says it can be accessed by using the WWW, that%26#039;s not always true. Just the regular address by itself is usually enough (as in your example), the WWW isn%26#039;t really required. I would just not use the WWW.

Then there is the electric bills from leaving it on. Try yahoo or lycos or bravenet tostart with. Chose a basic package to start with but make sure that you are able to upgrade if your site gets more popular. Things you need to know about are webspace; this is the amount of disk space allocated to you for your website. If you use lots of unoptimised graphics, you will see this deplete rapidly!

Bandwith is the amount of data transfer from your site. If your site is poular you will use more bandwidth as more people are downloading pages from your site. If you use lots of unoptimised images, your bandwith will deplete rapidly too!.

Often you will get some email boxes with your account.

I am a freelance web developer, and I am (of necessity) using Dreamweaver for the first time. I have finished and tested the site, now I want to publish it to the web. Go to Site %26gt; Manage Sites %26gt; Edit %26gt; Remote Info

If you haven%26#039;t already set up a FTP account for your website this is where you would put in the info to connect to your server.

Once that is set up you should be able to %26#039;put%26#039; files on your website. If you look above your folder structure in dreamweaver you should see a few icons

(Connect to Remote Host) (Refresh) (Get Files) (Put Files) etc...

The %26#039;put%26#039; will update your files to the domain and directory you specified in your remote settings. GET will grab everything and put it on your local folder.

As always, be careful because you will be overriding files when you get/put

Yes, there are plenty of books on the subject too. I recommend you visiting your local library, or if you go to school, check out the library in your school to just check out a book for free. The books really help you get started and then the web sites give you all of the latest HTML codes.

there are a lot more things to consider than the small space that yahoo is providing to give you a reasonable answer. It all depends really on your shop. Do you sell just in your country? Do you sell worldwide? What are your terms and conditions for sending items abroad? What are your policies on shipping and returns? What are your general terms and conditions? Who is your targeted group of costumers? How do I spread the word about my shop? What costs do I have for search engine marketing? Do I need marketing at all? How else can I attract more costumers to my shop? Newsletters? Vouchers? Discounts? Do I have to register for VAT? Do I need special licenses for particular sorts of products? (you didn%26#039;t mention what products you sell) Those are just a couple of things to be considered when your shop has opened. As somebody above already mentioned, what pay processor do I choose? Should I have more than one? You wrote that you have a web designer, he or she should already be aware of such questions and will certainly be able to help you with this.

DNS changes usually take up to 24 hours to propagate, so when you switch the NS record from it%26#039;s current IP to the new IP you will have a window where it%26#039;s possible that mail could bounce and never get to you. The best way to avoid this is to set the TTL (time to live) setting on your DNS record to something small like 5 minutes about a week before you intend to do the cutover. That way all the DNS servers out there on the net will be checking for a new record every 5 minutes and when you cut over the change should get propagated very quickly. Afterwards you can set the TTL to something normal like 24 hours.

How to help with domain?

I have a friend who owns some websites, one is an info site and two are forums and he got a message from the host that it%26#039;s getting too big in CPU usage and there is a problem that it could be shut down. He has been working very hard on these sites and has been paying for them out of his own pocket but he really can%26#039;t afford to pay any more then he already is. Many people use his sites and it would be very disappointing if it was to go down.

He was told by the hosts that if they moved to a RootDS Server they would be able to keep the sites but the problem is that the cost would be much more.

I was just wondering if any of you had any solutions or any suggestions that would help out with the amount of usuage being used. People are already willing to donate some, but I don%26#039;t think that will be enough.

Any help would be appreciated.

There is no way around bandwidth usage if you provide access to everyone. The more people that use a site the greater the bandwidth, when your site exceeds its alloted bandwidth then it is usually shut down until the beginning of the next billing cycle.

The only way to increase you bandwidth allotment on a host site tis to purchase it from the host, which costs more money.
