I need to know the details on how to get a website on the internet. I%26#039;ve designed all of the pages, and I%26#039;d like to know how domains and hosting work. I%26#039;ve found a few websites with free hosting, and some pretty cheap domains, but I don%26#039;t know it they will work. The website is a few hundred megs, so i need a domain that will let me give me a lot of storage, but still be cheap. And what does hosting do anyways?
How do I get a website on the internet.?
If you have already designed your page, you%26#039;re almost there. HOSTING is when you pay to use space on someone%26#039;s computer. They have a server that they sell space on. You pay them - upload your files to their server and it%26#039;s accessed from the internet.
Domain name is your %26#039;.com%26#039;. You typically %26#039;buy%26#039; that name from a company you find and typically it%26#039;s good for a specific period of time - at which time you %26#039;renew%26#039; your name.
You need %26#039;both%26#039; of these things to really get a site running. I have used %26#039;free%26#039; hosting but usually it has to contain a lot of ads. I choose to pay for my domain name and site name. Many times, the HOSTING people will provide you some software so you can %26#039;upload%26#039; your page to their server. Just ask them ahead of time..... Can get pretty sophisticated. Many people that do this will be happy to help you get your stuff on their server.

Hosting provides the disk space and the bandwidth.
I have a site at www.webhost4life.com, they%26#039;re an alright hosting company. Certainly cheap.
For your domain, GoDaddy.com is pretty good. Those two work together so they can easily get your site up. Then you%26#039;ll just have to upload it and your set.
Other Replys:dottk i think should work!
Other Replys:First of all let me explain what %26quot;hosting%26quot; really is:
Let%26#039;s say you have registered a business name. You have the merchandize and/or the equipment you need to run the business too. What do you need next? A %26quot;store front or office space%26quot; depending on the type of business. This %26quot;store front or office space%26quot; can be something you can buy (costly) or rent. Paying for webhosting is like renting %26quot;store front or office space%26quot;.
A few hundred megs is not really a big site. If have only HTML pages with pictures and other stuff and you don%26#039;t have any server-side scripts (e.g. .asp, .jsp etc) you can use any kind of server. Usually, UNIX based web hosting are cheaper. Look in eBay some decent ones are al low as $4/5 a month.
Good luck
Other Replys:I don%26#039;t think that Xoompages.com has a limit per se, but I don%26#039;t think they are who you%26#039;re looking for ... i.e. if you link a photo or something that%26#039;s on their site, it won%26#039;t transmit the photo. I think the entire page and it%26#039;s contents have to be on their site ... of course, the free stuff comes with the adverts.
Check it out though. If you want to see what the adverts look like, check out my index page (still under construction), but you%26#039;ll get a feel for the advertisements.
