Domain Names?

I am thinking of buying some domain names with a view to selling them at a later date in order to make some profit.

I am completely new to this sort of thing, so can you tell me if it is just a case of registering a domain name with the prefixes .com, .co.uk, .net, etc, and keeping them for a while then sell them on, or is there a lot more consideration to be given to this i.e. web hosting and putting the domain name on search engines etc?
